Vickey Kelver, owner and operator of Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services throughout Porter and LaPorte Counties, Indiana comes to this work with a passion for giving. “Starting Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services was a process and a journey that has been building for many years,” says Vickey. “I always knew I had the ability to encourage and help people, now I am truly able to put that gift into action.”
Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services matches seniors who want to help with seniors who need a little help. This peer-to-peer assistance allows seniors in need to receive care from someone they can trust and relate to. At the same time, seniors providing care remain active in their community and often form strong friendships with the seniors they are helping.
“There is a tremendous need for additional help for families with aging loved ones, who would like to stay in their homes as long as possible. Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services is a solution that helps everyone involved. We can help seniors handle day-to-day chores so they can enjoy time with their family. We can bring peace of mind to family members, knowing their loved ones are able to get all their needs met while maintaining their quality of life. We can give a caring senior the opportunity to do good and give back to the community, while making a new friend.”
The senior Providers who work with Vickey offer many services including wellness calls, transportation assistance, doctors appointments, shopping and local trips, meal preparation, light housekeeping, home maintenance and small repairs, yard work, pet care, reading, laundry, personal grooming and dressing, medicine reminders, mobility assistance, over night stays (24 hour care), holiday decorating, and most importantly, companionship.
Vickey has many personal care giving experiences that have ultimately inspired her to be there for seniors in the Porter and LaPorte counties. Being on call and assisting an Aunt who lived alone while battling cancer, spending time with several family members who had lost their husbands and thrived with the additional company, and assisting with 24-hour care with a hospice team to help her own father transition easier, were just some of the experiences that made the point hit home. “Families need this type of help and I am happy to be able to provide it.”
Vickey grew up in Starke County and graduated from Purdue University, West Lafayette, with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. After spending some time in Pittsburgh, PA and Cincinnati, OH Vickey and her husband Greg moved back to LaPorte, IN and started a family at which point Vickey decided to take time off from her Interior Design Career to care for them. While taking care of her family Vickey was extremely active in her community volunteering with her church, public school, Girl Scouts, Psi Iota Xi and the local Home Schooling Association. Once her girls were grown Vickey went back to work in Interior Design, Sales and Customer Service. All of Vickey’s experiences, both professional and personal have helped guide her to Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services. “When I look back, I can clearly see that this was a journey. My experiences help me truly understand the needs of people, particularly seniors. I am so pleased to be part of something so extraordinary.”
Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services has sites throughout the U.S. The organization was founded by Kiran Yocom, who has a mission and a passion to help seniors live independently. Kiran’s personal interest in seniors grew out of her work with Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She leads the organization through compassion and caring for all.cm
